Understanding the Types of Home Insurance Policy Coverage Available
There are various types of home insurance policy coverage that may be available to a single applicant. Of the types of home insurance policies out there, it is usually up to the consumer to be sure that their home and their best interests are well covered, especially if they own an older home or a home that may require a special addendum.
The types of home insurance policies that might be applicable to most consumers include a basic and general policy that protects the consumer in the event of a fire. This type of home insurance policy generally also covers the damage that may be attributed to a lightening stroke and some other minor events. This type of home insurance policy is usually about as bare bones as it gets and offers little protection against other forms of damage. It also does not protect the consumer against any claims filed against him or her in the event of an injury on their property.
More effective types of home insurance policies allow for coverage based on all types of damage including excessive wind, hail, storm, and ice but generally not flood related coverage. For flood insurance, be sure to carry an extra policy as no home owners' insurance policies carry flood insurance as a standard practice. Some types of home insurance policies will allow you to add on home flood insurance through their company but this is not the same thing as standard coverage for flood related damage coverage within a home insurance policy.
Some types of home insurance policies allow you to add one additional buildings that may be on the property. Some will allow you to cover additional buildings that you own but are not necessarily on the same property. Check your policy's fine print carefully when you are adding on additional buildings, as this type of home insurance policy is bound to vary greatly between companies.
There are other types of home insurance policies designed especially for individuals who own property but rent out their properties to tenants. This type of home insurance policy is designed to cover not only the various acts of nature that can cause serious damage to the home, but also provides special provisions for damages caused by others living in the home who fail to pay the damages that would be awarded to the owner. There are usually long waiting periods and court records that must be submitted in the event that you need to file a claim based on damages caused by tenants, but having the insurance is definitely worth the time and extra cost if you rent out even just one home.
Never purchase any type of home insurance policy without completely understanding what it is that you are purchasing. With the vast array of possible policies along with the possible combination of policies, you need to slow down and check the policy's finer print to be sure that you are covered in the way that serves you best.
