Online Scams and Car Insurance
Online scams and car insurance are rare enough that they don't get a whole lot of media attention. That doesn't lessen the sting of finding out that you have been one of the scam artist's victims. Of course whenever there is an online marketplace, there is a scam waiting to happen. Knowing what to watch out for and knowing how to protect yourself make becoming a victim of an online car insurance scam highly unlikely. Just like scams that float through your email or scams that show up on the internet today and are gone without a trace tomorrow, scams online create doubt in the consumer's mind and they make it harder for legitimate companies to market their honest product.
Scams are more popular with other venues, but there are some scam artists who are trying to get you to link your PayPal account directly to their "car insurance' payment plan. You have no idea that you are not purchasing car insurance until you are in the position to hand over a fraudulent car insurance card during your inspection or during a routine traffic stop. These scams have a hard time setting in, but those who have been taken had to deal with a huge mess in the aftermath.
Consumers are urged never to link their payment method (online accounts like PayPal, bank accounts for regular drafts, or even credit card information) to any website without firs receiving proper proof that the website is real, that your information will go no farther, and without ample protection from the bank. It doesn't take long before the scam artist can wipe you out entirely, although this is unlikely. Banks do not investigate smaller amounts of money, even if they are willing to refund every last penny. It is more likely that small amounts (less the $1,000) will be taken out on small charges of less than $100.
Make sure that the car insurance company that you are dealing with has an operable phone number and a real address. In most cases, the online address that you are working with will have some security level alert from any number of software programs that interface with all websites. This helps let you know if the owner of the site is hiding their identity, which doesn't necessarily mean it is a scam but it is one of the indicating factors. Fortunately car insurance scams are rare. But protecting yourself is still an important step from being taken by one of the few that are out there. The victims of car insurance scams are really rather unconcerned with the quantity of them, only that they were hit by a scam artist.
