Medical Conditions and Car Insurance

Having a medical condition and finding car insurance that doesn't necessarily count you because of it can be a little difficult. In fact, many people in this country are denied car insurance because of a medical condition that doesn't actually hinder their ability to drive. Living with a medical condition that interrupts your life is difficult enough without having to rely on car insurance companies to decide whether or not you are fit to be behind the wheel. That can only be determined by a physician and you, and often you are the only one who really knows whether or not you can handle it.

Fortunately there are laws in effect to help us out. There are laws regarding what terms any insurance company can use when turning you down for car insurance and there are laws regarding discrimination against people with disabilities. In the eyes of car insurance companies, medical conditions can count as a disability if it is life affecting and it hinders one's ability to operate a vehicle safely and effectively.

Temporary medical conditions and car insurance can be just as frustrating. If you have been seriously injured and are taking prescription pain killers or if you have been recently disabled and there is no true determination about the extent of your disability, car insurance companies can be more than just a little unfair. However, not all insurance companies regard all medical conditions as a reasonable means to turn their potential clients away.

Most people think that medical conditions and car insurance are the chronic polarized necessary evils of life that simply can't gel. While there was a time when those with chronic or disabling medical conditions seriously impacted the possibilities of just about any individual, the equality acts and the forced rights of the disabled have forced many companies, including car insurance companies, to step forward and remove their prejudicial ways. In the early to mid eighties any car insurance company had the right to turn away those with chronic medical conditions. That is generally not the story anymore.

The unfortunate part of dealing with a medical condition and car insurance companies has become the medications that many people with medical conditions must take. There is a fairly long list of medications that have the potential to cause passing out, drifting off behind the wheel, and other dangerous behaviors. Insurance companies do have the right to turn down coverage based solely on medication complications or potential side effects. In cases like this, there is usually another medication that might work better with fewer side effects on the market, and talking to your doctor might push you in the right direction toward finding that medicine. Medical conditions and car insurance companies don't have to hinder your mobility, you just might have to find some alternatives along the way.
