Home Insurance and Dogs
Home insurance and dogs can be a very tricky arena to navigate. Some home insurance companies and dogs become such a polarized battle ground while other home insurance companies only pick fights with certain types of dogs, usually the large ones with the really large teeth. It is hard to find your neighborhood friendly home insurance and dog accepting program when you own two or more of those large, loveable beasts with the larger then life set of fangs. Fear is motivator for many people, even those who operate insurance companies, and a few bad seeds in the bunch can ruin the reputation of some of the best breeds out there. But nonetheless, as we come to learn, understand, and eventually accept, there are times when loving and owning those loveable misunderstood breeds comes like a constant black mark over our potential as any type of customer. Try renting when you own one of those beasts. Landlords literally laugh yet Fi—Fi down the street keeps marring the ankles of the mailman on a daily basis?
Many home insurance policies and dog issues are not really the fault of the insurance companies. Laws vary greatly from state to state regarding the ownership and liability of home insurance and dogs over 70 pound, or historically aggressive breeds. These laws definitely favor the insurance company and often assume that the dog breed in question is worthy of the fear of the general population and have usually had one or more incidents of notable violence in the past three years. Many home insurance and dog issues are not well founded from the dog owners' perspectives, but public outcry against these dogs has made it almost impossible to believe that even a small incident might not lead to a legal situation, give the human tendency toward over reactions.
For those who are looking for home insurance and dogs are part of their daily lives, there is no reason why you should be stuck footing the bill for those who have previously mistreated and misused some of these gentle giants in the past. In some states, the legislation allows for home insurance companies to penalize large dog owners, vicious breed owners, or in some cases all dog owners simply because previous individuals didn't know what their pups were all about and thought that teaching them aggression was cool. As a responsible dog owner, your rates are likely to decrease slowly over a period of time provided that you and your dog have nothing to do with the hysterics that lead to the unnecessary public opinion regarding large breeds and the so called vicious breeds. Hopefully there will be enough responsible owners in the future to help adjust the mandates against home insurance and dogs we all know and love to be the giant cuddlers.
