Claiming From A Life Insurance Policy

The main purpose of life insurance is to protect a person's loved ones from heavy financial obligations after the death of the person. Thus, for it to reach its full goal, the beneficiaries that will be left behind should definitely be involved in the whole life insurance business so that they would know what are covered and how to make the claims at the time it becomes necessary.

In the days following a person's death, the bereaved family would not want to think about life insurance, claims, and the likes. Naturally, that time is a heavy time for the family, and life insurance claims get in the way. However, due to the nature of insurance claims - which is that they are very important and highly necessary as well - they know that they need to get around to it somehow. Thus, having a clear idea of how claims are to be requested from a life insurance policy will surely help smooth things out for them.

If a life insurance policyholder dies, the first thing the beneficiaries have to do is inform the life insurance company handling the policy. If the policy is handled by a middleman - that is, the life insurance agent - he or she should be called upon immediately. Both the life insurance company and the life insurance agent can inform you of the requirements that need to be completed to claim from a policy. In the case that the life insurance policy is taken along with a group insurance, then the person in charge of that group should be the first to be contacted. The most important requirement, whichever way a policy was taken out, is the death certificate.

And since the contract will usually just list down names of beneficiaries, the beneficiaries naturally have to present proofs of identification as well. Spouses may also be asked to present copies of marriage certificates. Among all the requirements, you will also be required to fill up a claim form. Forms can be pretty complicated especially for beneficiaries not familiar with the policy taken out. In such cases, the company itself or the life insurance agent should be called on for help.

In many cases, the beneficiaries usually have no clear idea of what kind of policy was taken out, or of the other details of the policy. This can be hard for the beneficiaries, so it is advisable that details should be shared with them to make things easier for them. If the details have not been shared, beneficiaries can check with the policyholder's financial accounts to look at the payments made to the life insurance company. This can give them a clear picture of how much the life insurance policy holds. The policy should also make it clear how the claims should be released. The beneficiary can decide on whether they want to get a one-time payment of the entire claim, or divide the claim into several payment schedules.

After the requirements are fulfilled and submitted to the life insurance company, they will then process it. Usually, processing won't take too long. In most cases, the beneficiaries can receive the claims in less than a week. To make sure to stick to this schedule, though, make sure that the requirements are complete.
