Basic Home Insurance versus Premium Home Insurance

Basic home insurance can seem rather attractive to many home buyers, especially when a home is brand new or recently built and not a lot is expected to go wrong in the first few years. However, a brand new home doesn't prevent the weather from unleashing or vandals from destroying property. For those who are trying to tighten the belts, a basic home insurance policy is always going to be less expensive, but often doesn't even offer half the necessary coverage for reasonable events that happen all the time.

Of course, premium home insurance can seem like you are paying through the nose for a policy that you don't feel as though you can justify. It can be very hard to convince yourself that a premium home insurance policy is overkill when you haven't witnessed an incident in your own life for the last ten years. If you have been lucky so far, why would you expect that luck to change? In most cases, premium home insurance policies offer reasonable coverage for reasonable rates, but still do not offer the high level of coverage home owners require in order to be able to replicate their life as it is before a significant event, like a hurricane. Financial challenges are likely to ensue regardless of whether you are carrying a premium home insurance policy or basic home insurance.

Basic home insurance is generally going to offer you the coverage required in the event of a fire or if lightening strikes your home. The financial figures that accompany most basic home insurance policies are not likely to offer enough to replace your home and your belongings in the event that the home does burn down. Premium home insurance may provide you with almost full coverage against the loss of your home in the event of a fire or other catastrophe, but not necessarily. Read your fine print carefully when you are opting for premium home insurance. Read it even more carefully when you are considering basic home insurance. You are banking everything you own against the insurance policy, and that is not a place to cut any significant corners.

The bottom line is pretty simple. Basic home insurance is very much like throwing money out the window. Without a policy that will insure enough of your home and belongings to help you reestablish yourself, you may as well not carry any coverage at all. However, not all premium home insurance policies are the same. Read through them carefully and ask many questions. A good premium home insurance policy is likely to cover enough of your hard earned assets to help reestablish your life in the event of a catastrophic event.
