Auto Insurance for the Disabled
Anyone who has had a disability knows how difficult it is to get auto insurance for the disabled. Those who have not experienced a disability have a report generated once every five to ten years, depending on the auto insurance company, that highlight the "capabilities' that individuals with certain disabilities can perform. Of course, the car insurance companies like to place individuals with any type of disability into the high risk category, even if the individual does not pose an additional risk behind the wheel. Auto insurance for the disabled is very difficult to get, maintain, and of course, find for a reasonable cost as compared to what those without a disability pay.
As a person with a physical disability, I understand that there are things I don't do as well as those without a disability. Yet I know myself better than a doctor who gets to write about what the majority of individuals with similar disabilities are capable of. Thankfully, there are a few smaller online car insurance companies that are starting to level the playing field, play to the letter of the law, and introduce reasonable car insurance rates based on personal history, not a disability.
The laws state that the car insurance companies are not permitted to ask outright of our disabilities in some states, but all states are able to ask whether or not regular medication is taken. The law does not inhibit (in most states) the purging of information derived from the answer to the medication question. This is a tricky line and one that many people with disabilities are not quite sure where they stand on it. Verification from a physician can get you removed from the high risk category under most circumstances provided that you are indeed capable of operating a car.
While the world is certainly not set up to make living with a disability any easier, auto insurance for the disabled should not be something that we are penalized for. Our driving history, credit rating, and other relevant information should be the basis for our rate. Looking to the smaller online auto insurance companies increases your chances of finding auto insurance for the disabled that isn't quite so concerned with anything more than our proven ability to drive.
While state laws vary greatly, the more informed you become as a consumer, the easier it becomes to fight for your rights as a citizen in good standing. Check out your state laws thoroughly and know your rights when you shop for auto insurance for the disabled. In the coming years, perhaps we will just be considered the same way everyone else is considered. After all, our driving record is the greatest evidence to our driving abilities.
