The other day I was shopping for auto insurance and found that there are numerous car insurance companies out there that I had never even heard of. I grew up in the State Farm, Progressive, and Allstate insurance world and had never heard of these smaller companies. Of course, I did a little digging because it was clear that their offer to save me a bundle on my car insurance was looking like a good deal. But I wanted to know if online car insurance companies safe. Now that we have entered the automated and agent—less world of auto insurance, it was clear that anyone with significant financial backing could develop their own online car insurance company. While I thought this was both entirely ingenious and utterly frightening, I went forward with my personal investigation anyway.

There are a lot of different ways that one can investigate an online car insurance company to determine whether or not it is safe. The first thing that I wanted to check out was their contact information. Absolutely, every single one that I stopped and called had real people available to tell me where they were located (the information matched the website) and how they were able to offer me such better rates. In each case their customer service was top notch with patient and friendly people talking to me like we were neighbors hanging out on the front porch together. To say that I was amazed would have been an understatement. As I continued to investigate whether or not online car insurance companies were safe, I began to realize something pretty interesting. These were real companies. All of them had all the real company necessities.

To continue my investigation, I checked into Progressive, Allstate, and of course State Farm to see how they measured up against the little guys. Besides having to deal with a great deal of automation before I was able to reach a real live human being to talk with, I found their relatively unprofessional and unhelpful quips a little abrasive. Considering that I was the one who spent the previous twenty minutes pressing one for this and two for that, I was calm and spoke to them as professionals. I was more than just a little disappointed by their performance as well as their basic lack of respect.

So at the end of my little personal investigation, I found out some rather surprising information. For starters, yes, online car insurance companies are definitely safe. For as long as there are thinking people on the planet and an internet to develop these thoughts, there will always be a certain number of scams out there, even for something like auto insurance. But compared side by side, I can definitely attest to the fact that online car insurance companies are not only safe, but they are seriously trying to save you money and as well as providing better than average customer service.
