Agents and the Downturn in the Health Insurance Industry
With the health insurance industry in a downswing, many people are being affected. While the media wants to talk mostly about how consumers are paying more for coverage, there is another group to take into consideration: insurance agents. How are the problems in the health insurance industry affecting the way that agents do business? Although not talked about often, agents are being forced to make changes, in both positive and negative ways.
With health insurance costing more than ever before, agents can look at this two ways. On one side of things, more and more consumers are dropping coverage or not buying at all. As an agent this is a bad thing because it leaves a smaller pool of potential buyers. But on the other side of things, rising prices also mean that more consumers are searching for an alternative. For this reason, agents can sell to those who are in the market for a cheaper policy with another company. In the end, this more or less evens out.
To go along with this, agents are also being heavily affected by the number of businesses that are cutting back on group health insurance coverage. The number of businesses doing away with this is on the rise, which in turn means that agents are losing a lot of repeat business, as well as the opportunity to attract new customers. Fortunately, when things turn around these companies will begin to purchase group coverage again and agents will be able to get in on the ground level.
Although consumers are greatly affected by the problems within the health insurance industry, some agents are suffering as well. It is safe to say that millions of health insurance agents are hoping that the new president quickly makes changes that will positively effect the direction of the industry.
