A Quick Introduction to Personal Health Insurance

Personal health insurance is an absolute necessity and the more you know about it, the better it is. There are several benefits of having a medical or a health insurance policy. For one, you can save yourself a ton of money if you have some form of personal health insurance since medical attention has become so expensive these days. You also need to get a personal health insurance policy that is best suited for your requirements and to do that, you need to first know the different types of options that are open to you.

Types of Personal Health Insurance

You will see that your personal health insurance can broadly divided be into 2 categories. In the first category, you can club all indemnity insurance plans. An indemnity plan is one in which all your hospitalization or medical expenses are reimbursed by the insurance company. This reimbursement can be in many forms, for example, it can be 100% of your expenses, or there might be a cap on the amount that you can spend on medical expenses per day. The reimbursement can also be limited to a specific number of days. The reimbursement is dependent upon many things, for example, the amount of premium you are ready to pay annually, the type of plan you have chosen, your current medical history and health, and so on.

The second type of category can contain all Health Management Organizations or HMOs, Point of Service or POS plans, as well as PPO or Preferred Provider Organizations. In the latter category, as the name implies, 'managed care' means that there is an arrangement or an understanding between a network of doctors, hospitals, and other health care specialists. There is also a pre-determined agreement between you, the insured party, and this network of health care providers. This means a physician of this network will be responsible for coordinating and referring you to other specialists affiliated with this network. If you wish to make an insurance claim then you have to consult one of the doctors within the network and be treated at a hospital that is attached to this network.

There isn't much difference between these two types of plans for the simple reason that both insure you against unforeseen emergencies. There is also no clear answer whether one category is better than the other. You can select the category that best suits your requirements. Within each category, you will further need to determine the type of coverage you require, the cost of your policy and your premiums, and if you would like to club your personal health insurance with your family or co-workers, and so on.
